Cupcakes are the new favourite, and are being requested frequently, as an alternative or as a complement to a bigger, more traditional cake. Of course, they have always been a beloved ingredient of a children’s party, but they are now making their way into every kind of special occasion.
Initially, a lot of people thought that the emergence of cupcakes as a replacement for traditional cakes, was a bit of a ‘fad’; that they had a quirky appeal, which wouldn’t last very long. Perhaps people thought they were a bit too humble or light-hearted to fully represent the importance of their special occasion. However, cupcakes can be just as elegant, just as beautiful, and just as special as the more traditional alternatives.
The most simple of designs still brings delight. They appeal to children and adults alike – really regardless of the design. Cupcakes can be as elegant or as simple as you like: they can be the beautiful wedding favour for each of your guests, or the treat to take home in the kids’ party goodie bag. They can be used to commemorate a special occasion, or just a lovely, comforting thing to do, to spend an afternoon baking.
One of my dad’s favourite pictures, from when I was young, is of a five-year-old me, in our kitchen, clutching a tray of freshly-baked cupcakes. I was obviously very pleased with the outcome; unaware of, or unconcerned by, the burned bits, the overflow, and the irregularities in presentation. As far as I am concerned, that photograph is a pure illustration of that ease, warmth and comfort of childhood, of your mum teaching you how to bake, and your dad delighting in your creation.
It is perhaps most children’s first venture into the world of baking, and in so being, comes with a feeling of love and accomplishment for the child, and brings to mind comfort, charm, simplicity, and fond memories to the child within most adults. Whatever they have been created for, cupcakes undoubtedly hold a special appeal to everyone.
There’s a wistfulness about this much-loved treasure, easily embodied in the names ‘fairy cakes’ and ‘butterfly buns’. There’s a magical allure; an element of whimsy and fantasy. So, for those of you who may turn your nose up at the humble cupcake, I don’t think you’re fully appreciating the full and complete experience of what this fanciful little indulgence offers.
